Well, my girlfriend Julie and I are having a baby girl in the next few months so we’ve started planning a baby shower. My entire life I thought that guys didn’t go to these things, but I was told that I would have to attend. Since I have to attend I decided that I should also get a little bit of say in the choice of invitations.

Here’s what Julie decided upon:

and here’s what I wanted:

Please help us decide which one to choose, I really need some support here.

Yeah, I said it…. The Real World sucks… the little bubble that exists from 9 to 5(or 8 to 5 in my case) is horrible, unnatural, and wrong.

No wonder there are so many depressed and psychotic people in the world today, the corporate world sucks all the interest, creativity, and joy from your life. Case in point: I spent last night(a friday) sleeping!

Sleeping on a Friday isn’t necessarily such a bad thing, but I didn’t do it by choice. When I was my own boss I didn’t go out on Friday because I hated the crowds, I’d go out on Tuesday or Wednesday or Thursday, but it was my choice.

Since starting my corporate life I’ve lived in a state of constant drowsiness, poor health, and drug(caffeine) addiction. Before I had a boss I smiled constantly, took every opportunity to express my creativity, felt healthier, and did what I want. Now I feel like I’m dying all the time, wake up unnaturally every day, and can’t even stay awake to do anything on the weekends. And the pay… good god, not working for myself I make 1/10 of what I used to per hour(although it is a lot steadier). I could literally work for 2 days and make as much as I make now all month, and it’s not that I’m getting a low wage… talking to some of the people around me I am actually making a decent corporate wage… it makes me feel bad for all the people who devote their lives to this shit.
I think as soon as I am able I will get back to being my own boss and stop wasting my time making someone else rich.

Hopefully this will be short and sweet.

I always find it extremely interesting to watch the game that plays out between two people that want to have sex with each other… sometimes it’s almost as if neither of them can see the outcome of their actions while everyone around them can.
Am I just getting older? I can look around any bar, any night of the week, and know with almost absolute assuredness whether or not any two people will go home to fuck, to make love, to sleep together, to cuddle, or to keep from being alone. Why is it that they can’t see the same thing? Something about not seeing the forest for the trees? Would I be able to see the same thing?

Maybe that’s what separates the men from the boys, the ability to recognize the potential to get laid or not, before wasting their time… I’d like to think that I have that skill… It doesn’t always seem that way though. I seem to coast through life, girlfriend to girlfriend, with not much down time in between. Maybe I’m really good at knowing when I’ll get laid. Maybe I’m really good at knowing when I’ll be compatible with someone. Maybe I’m even just someone who is universally compatible(yeah right, I’m such a dick).

I wonder what it is that causes every other person in a room to be able to see a love connection forming when the two involved are completely clueless… perhaps I’ll never know

The imminent implossion of Digg » Thinking Outloud

It looks like my article on Digg’s broken commenting system helped contribute a little to this new idea that the site is doomed and on its way out. I certainly didn’t intend for that reaction, nor do I agree that is the direction that the site is taking.
From the article on macsimumweb.com:

“There are two factors leading to Digg’s downfall. The first is that their voting system obviously isn’t democratic…Their second problem is the commenting of users has become decidedly unsocial.”

The second problem is one that I certainly agree with, that was really the focus of my original article. The first problem, though understandable, is a little off the mark. I don’t think that Digg’s voting system isn’t democratic enough… I think that it’s TOO democratic.
Yeah, you heard me, too democratic. For Digg’s story promotion to work some people should be factored in more heavily than others, similar to the way that American politics works. En masse, the population is extremely shallow minded and stupid. Don’t ask me why, it just is, and I’m included in that figure. People don’t really place too much thought behind stories that they Digg, because there is no negative consequence to Digging a bad story. If we wanted the system to be “fixed” we’d have to add one. One way to go about this, in my opinion, would be to add a ranking system that looks at the quality of Diggs that a user is making and assign them more power based on that quality. Even notify the user when they hit a certain threshold and give them “mod” power, maybe power to the point where one or two mod diggs will promote a story. Along with this new system we would definitely need a new button beside the Digg It button, namely Bookmark It. This way when someone wanted to see a story later they could bookmark it, then a Digg would once again become more valuable. The final piece of this puzzle would be a moderator page that allowed the common users to vote on the quality of their Diggs, this way a moderator that was seen submitting commercial sites or making poor quality Diggs would be out of power. This system is similar to the limited democracy that we have in the US; elected officials deal with most of the day to day goings on with the support of the people, but the people ultimately have the power. Even with this system in place a good story could still be promoted even without any mod votes.
But anyways, enough theory, back to the doom-sayers. Digg is not going anywhere, it’s probably not even going to lose any value. Even with all of it’s apparent problems the site is a solid idea and will always have readers. I’d love to see some changes come into effect to deal with the new users that Digg is gaining, but I’ll be reading Digg no matter what.

What I didn’t expect was that I would be referenced on Wikipedia, oh the power of the web.
On Wikipedia’s entry for “Digg.com” the statement “It has been suggested that any bias that does exist is due to a fundamentally flawed design in Diggs comment moderation system” is attributed to my site, that has to be one of the coolest digg after effects yet.
Apparently what I was saying took root with at least one person, I’m glad that my thoughts got out there and I hope that they cause a positive change in the digg community.
Thanks again to everyone who commented on my article, especially the intelligent criticisms.

Well, I just went through the Digg effect and was very pleased by how well my hosting provider, Dreamhost, was able to handle the traffic.
I was a little worried about how quickly pages would be served because sometimes I’ll get long load times when going to my pages, but during the period of heaviest traffic the site actually seemed to respond a little faster than usual.
I was very interested in all of the comments that I got on my blog and also on the digg page itself. It was kind of wild how quickly the traffic came on, I saw that my story had gotten promoted with 27 votes as I left the house to get a bottle of wine. By the time I got back my blog was full of comments and I had almost 300 diggs. As it sits now I have around 1070, but that seems to still be climbing slowly.
Since receiving all the comments I am going to take Ben’s advice and add threaded commenting to my blog just as soon as I can find the most elegant way to do so. I also wanted to mention that all of my ads are pay-per-click, so even after the huge amount of bandwidth that was used up I made $0.60. I posted the article so I could get some discussion going, I also hoped that the people of Digg would be looking and might implement a few of the changes that I proposed if they saw enough support.
I love Digg for the variety and volume of stories, but at times I would love to have just a little more engaging discussion. We’ll see if the article made any difference, thanks to everyone who participated.

For long time readers of the news site Slashdot the heavy volume of useless comments has become more or less a way of life. For every story there are the troll, the flame wars, and the crapfloods, but Slashdot’s moderation system seems to do a pretty good job of filtering out the useless, even if it does filter out unpopular viewpoints along the way. With the moderation system in place users can still engage in a decent conversation even having to put up with an occasional asinine comment, but is seems like conversation is broken on Digg.com.
Any time I’ve tried to have a conversation on Digg it has quickly degraded into a crapflood. Digg has a moderation system, it’s actually even open to all which should help eliminate moderation bias, in theory.
So what’s the big problem? What is it that Slashdot does that allows at least some intelligent conversation? It’s simple. Slashdot has multiple reply levels while Digg only has one reply level, so conversation is essentially limited to a statement and one reply. Take a look for yourself, I’ve looked all over to try and find out how I might reply to someone else’s reply, but I never saw the possibility.
Digg also doesn’t e-mail users when someone replies to their comments, which would allow someone to post a comment and know when they got a reply.
Sadly, Digg has better stories than Slashdot, maybe because of the sheer volume, maybe for some other reason. I really wish that Digg could get their commenting system up to par, it would be great to get the same level of discussion, or even a higher level.
Maybe along with multiple levels of reply Digg could add a reputation system that would either boost or handicap posters based on the percentage of comments that they’ve had Dugg down, but I think I’m getting a little ahead of myself.

But I was really surprised that it failed the Acid2 test. I know that the layout engine is still being developed, but you’d think that a group that extolls the virtues of standards compliance would make sure that the public alpha software would at least pass the most known of all tests.
